God Jul!

Or Merry Christmas as they say in English! The blog has not been so active during the autumn, but that will change next year as it will be updated almost on a daily basis, that is a new years promise!

I should also mention I have started to dj every third Saturday on the club Musslan in Stockholm, instead of Thursdays. In a couple of days I will present the annual 100 best songs of 2011 from 100 different acts. Until then, you have to settle with my Christmas playlist.

So walk out to winter a sing a holiday hymn!

Good news, really good news

Last time I was in the DJ booth my club was recommended as the best club in Stockholm that evening in Sweden´s largest paper, Dagens Nyheter!

I was of course very happy with this and it will bring som ereal confidence into the next dj set on Thursday next week. This time I will play indie and soul from this year only, 2011!

Expect a mixture of indie and soul in the best Postcard spirit! One Orange Juice song per evening is a promise. Every time I dj it is from 9 in the evening to one at night. Welcome!

Top 30 of 2011 - so far - place 5-1!

5. Random Axe - Random call

Cool song and cool video.

4. Joker feat. Jessie Ware - The Vison (Let me breathe)

Great dubstep.

3. Tv on the radio - Second song

My favourite Tv on the radio song since "Wolf like me".

2. Charles Bradley - The world (is going up in flames)

Almost as great as soul gets. Its a hugh shame we havn´t heard an album from Charles bradley until now - when he is 62 years old. But you are never too old to make great music!:)

1. Lycke Li - I follow rivers (The magician remix)

The Magician´s remix of Swedish star Lycke Li´s I Follow rivers must be the greatest remix in years. So unbelieveabely great! It will take something really, really special to knock this song off the throne for the "best song of 2011"-title. Lycke Li rules right now!

Top 30 of 2011 - so far - place 10-6

10. Frankie & the heartstrings - Fragile

Released already in late 2009 as a single, but not avaliable on an album until this year, as their debut album was released. Therefore this great pace shifting song is available to pick to the top 30. And the tenth spot it sure deserves.

9. The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

If you like MGMT you probably like this too.

8. About Group - Your´e no good

Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip decided to start a new project with a lot of blues and soul in the songs. And this is the best song from that new album.

7. Hercules and love affair - My house

If this doesn´t get you movin on the dancefloor, I don´t know what.

6. Syket - Syket Disco

Great Swedish band and I really, really recommend this album.

Hitta fler artister som Syket Myspace Music

Top 30 of 2011 - so far - place 15-11

15. Serenades - Birds

Swedes Adam Olenius (Shout out louds) and Markus Krunegård (Laakso) teame dup to form Serenades and the result was of course great.

14. Foster the people - Pumped up kicks

Cool and smooth tune.

13. Cut Copy - Take me over

Aussies Cut Copy didn´t dissapoint with their new album and continues to make catchy tunes like this. Here they perform it live in Stockholm.

12. Wire - Please take

Please take the knife out of my back. And when you do, please don´t twist it.

11. Tyler, the Creator - Yonkers

Heavy stuff...

Top 30 of 2011 - so far - place 20-16

20. Pusha T - Raid

Really cool hip hop song. Ring ring...

19. Anna Järvinen - Lilla Anna

The Swede-Finn with the beautiful voice has made an equally beautiful tune from her latest album.

18. Joan as police woman - The magic

Those who have listened to a couple of her albums - as myself - appreciate her a lot. But Joan as police woman´s Punk rock R´n b is still so underrated. Deserves a lot more praise from critics and music fans.

17. Cults - Abducted

Catchy tune that may very well climb on this list as they year closes to an end in December. It just grows and grows every time I hear it. Well made video too.

16. Tune-Yards - My country

Creative and playful song. For those who like Vampire weekend, but still wants to hear something more then them.

/ The Drumming Cat

Top 30 of 2011 - so far - place 25-21

25. Battles - Futura

Really cool song that it´s impossible to not get up and move your feet to.

24. Cat´s eyes - Cat´s eyes

The Drumming Cat likes cats. And of course the cat´s eyes too.

23. Smith Westerns - Weekend

One of the earliest godd releases of the year. And it still sounds great. Timeless music.

22. Jenny Wilson - Work

One of my personal favourite acts. On her latest album "Blazing" she has made new versions of her songs from the previous album "Hardships" plus a couple of new songs. "Work" is a cover of a Bob Marley song and one of the new great soul and gospel-inspired tracks on her latest album.

21. Peter, Bjorn & John - Second Chance

Peter, Bjorn and John continues to deliver new hits and this is certainly no exception.

Top 30 of 2011 - so far - place 30-26

A little more than half the year has passed and it´s time to sum up the true highlights of these six months. I have placed my personal favourites from 30 to 1. In each blog post I will present five of those songs. Only one song per act. We begin with place 30 to 26.

30. Tennis - Marathon

Catchy perfect pop.

29. Autisterna - Sov

Swedish band who made this lovely tune.

28. Destroyer - Chinatown

Canadian act with this beautiful tune

27. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness blues

Hailed by the critics and they sure deserve it - and of course also holds a place on this list.

26. Mohammed Ali - Postkodsmiljonär

Swedish hip hopper with foreign background. It might be hard to understand what he is rapping about, so just listen to the great beat. The title actually menas "post code millionare", referring to the "post code lottery" show.

Visit the Tropics in Stockholm

Yes it´s possible! Even in this cold part of the world. A couple of friends of mine are running a great club called Tropikerna (The Tropics) which is a really good place to go if you are visiting Stockholm. Here is where you find adrress for the club etc. Their next gig is on April 16th, the same date as another friend was djing in Stockholm. Below is one video where I interview Klas and Pontus who runs the club. And then there is also one video with an example of what you can expect from this club.

Enjoy!

A great career move

Recently a friend of mine, Sara-Märta, got her own radio show as part of the program Musikguiden i P3 (in recent monts it has improved a lot in my mind), where she dedicates an hour to her own selection of great music. It´s a one hour show at 10 in the evening on Thursdays. She also runs her own blog, which you can find here(in Swedish).

If you want to listen to her djing, visit Debaser Medis in Stockholm on April the 16th.

She is doing pretty well at the moment.

Sweet Seoul Music

Noticed the other day to my surprise I had about 100 visitors from South Korea to this blog. I don´t know many unique visitors those were, but it is still a very high number compared to how many persons that usually visit my blog from just one country. I have to highlight this somehow. Unfortunately I have to admit my knowledge on Korean music is not that strong, but instead of music from Seoul I thought I could offer you some soul music...

Charles Bradley is one of the absolute best soul acts in recent years. He recently made his debut in the world of recordings. What makes thsi extraordinary is that he is not that young, but was discovered much later in life. This song is one of absolute favourites so far this year. Korean readers, please comment and share some Korean recommendations please!

New Swedish indie!

Lycke Li is probably causing most buzz on internet at the moment, but there is much more to Swedish music then her this spring.

Two bands which I highly recommend are releasing new albums, called Syket and Det Vackra livet. Det vackra livet is The Mary Onettes singing in Swedish!

To brilliant Swedish ladies are also back with new albums later this spring. Those are Jenny Wilson and Anna Järvinen.

Times they are changin...

Nothing lasts forever. Sometimes that can be in a more positive direction and sometimes in a less positive one. I have recently moved to a new apartment, an apartment for students only located in Stockholm. Of course fun with a new envoirnment.

But sometimes change isn´t for the better. For example, a couple of weeks ago my favourite radio show p3 pop was aired for the last time. Instead, this Monday, Musikguiden i P3 replaced all of the radio channel´s previous shows dedicated to different genres.

The decision was taken because it is no longer modern to label music and genres are nowadays so connected to each other and mixed up. Therefore all music should be played in one show, no mater genre.

I dont really get this. First of all, its true genres have been more mixed up in recent years, but that does not mean genres have completely vanished and I do not believe every person on this planet listens to every genre. It was perfect to have expertise knowledge in every genre show, which no longer exists. If i then would have wanted to listen to Hip hop or dance I could listen to those shows and get a good education at the same time.

Now you are forced to sit and wait for the genres/songs you like instead of just be able to choose to listen to what you like. In short, they have a point about the development of genres, but it is widely exaggerated that it is no longer a need for specific shows. And the labels pop, dance etc. are also labels which includes A LOT, so you can´t really say those shows had limited frames.

In the show they also mixes new songs with interviews, guests, parts from concerts etc. etc. As it used to be, I was able to choose between shows and get the best avalaible expertise on the subject and also be able to choose if I would have wanted to a concert later. Now the show is all over the place and the show doesn´t seem to have a profile.

I want to end this blog post by recommending the new app available Apples App store Itunes from Swedish web radio station Gimmeindie. Despite both these negative and positive aspects of change, I do hope it is as Morrissey sings, "In the future when all´s well".
