Every region is a good music region - Southern Africa

From now on I will go through every region of the world and present a suitable playlist for that region. The inclusion criteria is that the song or band name has to have a connection to the region, an album has been recorded there or simply that the act is from that region.

The regions are the same as the UN definitions.

I will begin with Southern Africa, the home of Miriam Makeba. She is included with a couple of other acts from the region and one song is about South African city Johannesburg. But there are a couple of inclusions which deserves some more explanation.

Paul Simon recorded much of his album "Graceland" there and the hit "You can call me Al" is included.

Zimbabwean Zeke Maniyika was part of my favorite band, the Scotts in Orange Juice. Two songs where Zeke provides the vocals are included.

The Brittish band Manfred Mann was named after their keyboardist from South Africa with the same name.

Another Brittish band, Kaiser Chiefs are named after the South African soccer team Kaizer chiefs. Kaiser Chiefs are from Leeds and well known South African international defender Lucas Radebe played for both Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United. Possibly thats why they named the band after the club.

The Drumming Cat recommends a dog

The Drumming Cat is of course normally afraid of dogs and runs as soon as he sees one, but this time I can make an exception and recommend one instead. I am of course talking about Swedish label Labrador records and some of their latest releases.

The label is home to some of the finest Swedish indie artists and according to themselves "Sweden´s and the world´s finest purveyor of pop music". This month Johan Hedberg - part of the group Suburban kids with biblical names - released a new song. Download it here.

Acid House Kings has released the single "Heaven knows I miss him now" together with Television personalites members Dan Treacy and Texas Bob.

And here you can download the song "Come rain, come sunshine" from the group Pallers, who released their album last year.

Enjoy the music from Labrador!

First Aid Kit out with a new album!

Swedish duo First Aid Kit has now released their new album, which is called "The Lions Roar". The title song of the album - obviously also named "The Lions Roar" was released during the autumn and also featured on my top 100 songs of 2011 from 100 different acts list. I would be surprised if not one of their new songs grabs a spot in the best of 2012 playlist.

First Aid Kit will be touring during the Winter and Spring all around the world! Check out their web page for more info.

Unfortunately I can´t say "until next time" with a Lion´s roar. The Drumming Cat can only squeeze out a small miaow...

Hip hop as political weapon?

Stumbled upon this very interresting article about how the U.S. Government - according to the author - tries to use hip hop as a diplomatic tool in foreign politics. The author then puts this in a historical context and describes how hip hop often has been a genre that expresses critque towards government and injustices in society.

First DJ gig of the year!

Yes, tonight is the first DJ gig of the year.

Every time I am dj:ing I thougt it would be nice to post a music video that says something about my club. What better way to start that new tradition then with my favourite northern soul song of all time. That is, The Epitome of Sound with "You don´t love me".

Someone has made a really cool video for this song. If I didn´t know any better, I would assume it is an original music video. The clips are oerfectly matched with the music. And I hope people dance like those in the video tonight.:)

10 in the evening at Musslan Bar, the address is Dalagatan 46 in Stockholm.

Best of 2011 and the start of 2012!

One week has now passed by of the new year. And to conclude it, here is my top 100 playlist of 2011 from 100 different acts!

The list contains everything from Sbtrkt, Joker, Lycke Li, Charles Bradley, Feist, Little Dragon, Anna Järvinen, Com Truise, Jens Lekman, Jenny Wilson etc.

The list is not in any rating order, but my favourite song of the year is still The Magicians remix of Lycke Li´s "I Follow rivers". Still so, so, so good...

This week Swedish duo Studio - where Dan Lissvik is one member - announed that they will split. The year will hopefully continue on a happier note as I have my first dj gig tomorrow Saturday. Check out the home page for the place Musslan for gig updates!
